Introduction

Hey guys, welcome back to our tutorial! Wait, I forgot that I'm not a YouTuber :(. Well, I hope this page will give you as much or even more information than the YouTube tutorials out there. This is the second part to The Road to Amethyst tutorial series. If you haven't already, please go ahead and check The Road to Amethyst - Part One as well! In this part, I will show strategies on surviving in the winter and (hopefully) achieving your dreams. I'm sure that some of you do not need to read all of this guide (if you do, that's totally fine, that's what I made it for), so feel free to skip ahead or skim through some parts of it!

Table of Contents

  1. Hunting in the Winter (Obtaining winter fur and food)
  2. Drinking in the Winter (Refilling water)
  3. Becoming Maxed (Obtaining diamond and amethyst)
  4. Challenger (Killing a dragon)

** Please note that these steps can be done in different orders, these are sorted only from my preference.

1. Hunting in the Winter

Meet the Mobs

A bit bored with wolves and spiders? (and occasional rabbits?) Well, the winter has whole new mobs ready to take you down. Imagine being thrown in the polar bear exhibition in a zoo. Yes, that's what awaits you in the new biome. There are two mobs in the winter, excluding the dragon, which is in the cave. The arctic fox is fast and furious (and furry). The polar bear is slow but strong. (also furry). You can learn more about them in mobs. How to kill them? It's not as hard as you think, with a decent weapon and a decent connection.

Face the Mobs

Winter mobs are best killed when they are stacked. This is because killing them takes longer than forest mobs and there are no spiders that can trap you and deal siginificant damage. Note that beginners at first should play safe and kill one by one. Winter mobs are slower than the player when you are not holding a weapon, so it is easy to group them.

Fight the Mobs

The only way to safely fight winter mobs is to place a fire or two, and circle around it while occasionally attacking the mobs that are chasing you. Note that the winter mobs are faster than you when you are swinging. However, you can further the distance by not attacking for a few seconds. Make sure you are attacking from a safe distance. Holding left click will lead you to death. It is certainly easier to circle around two fires, but once you get used to it, one fire will work just fine. (Sorry for the low quality images, I recorded myself and then took screenshot from the videos so that's why it's bad)

During the day, or if you have a good chapka, you can fight the mobs away from fires. Just occasionally attack the mob that's chasing you in a line. Be sure to have spare campfire in case you run out of the cold bar.

Winter Fur

You need to have blue thread to craft any items from winter fur. You can make thread by combining thread from spiders with diamonds! (See the Becoming Maxed section.) You can craft advanced items using the winter fur. The most common way of using it is for the Cap and Scarf. This provides the maximum cold protection! (also makes you look cool.) You will need 15 winter fur and 10 blue thread for this item.

Winter fur is also used to craft Winter Hood and the Winter Peasant's Tunic. Note that you need to complete special quests for the ingredients of these clothing.

For uses on winter fur, please make sure to check this page!

2. Drinking in the Winter

Oops

So, you've ventured out in the winter, and realize that your water bar is going down. Maybe you didn't read Part One, or you just forgot. You wish had water bottles to drink, but you don't. You try to drink snow but it's frozen. What can you do? You try to find a pond, like you always did in the forest. But you see that everything is covered by snow.

Option 1: Melt Ice

If you have a shovel and a bottle, don't panic! Just place a campfire, and dig until you have 20 ice cubes. Then, just melt it near a fire and make drinkable water. Very smart!

Option 2: Ocean

What if you forgot a shovel, or didn't have any in the first place? You can always go back to the forest, or believe it or not, go to the ocean. If you are in the right half of the winter, it may be smart to go to the opening in the border between the winter and the ocean. Then, you can refill your bottles there. Hey, at least you have the ability to drink ocean water somehow!

Note that going to the top left lake in the forest may be a better choice if you are out of other resouces.

3. Becoming Maxed

Believe it or not, becoming maxed is the easier part. Just sit there and mine until you have it! Well.

Diamonds

Diamonds are the second highest tier of resources. There are three small deposits in the left top corner of the map, and four large deposits in the right corner of the map by the cave. If you are looking to only get a few amounts of diamond, the left corner will do the job. If you are trying to get a decent amount, or going for amethyst as well, you should go to the far right corner. The diamonds located in the right corner are pretty further apart. There are two in each side of the cave. Even though it's a bit difficult to traverse, it's always better to move between diamonds occasionally and be efficient. Making a base in one of the larger diamonds and staying there is not a good idea, since you are blocking the diamonds from other players, and also collecting about 25% of what you can really collect.

Amethyst

What the article is about. :-) With amethyst, you will have possibly the strongest equipment in the game. (Except for the Dragon Sword, Dragon Helmet, and Super Hammer) Amethyst is located on the deepest point of the cave, on the right top corner of the map. There are three amethyst deposits.

To get there, you will have to either wear an Explorer's Hat, block the dragons with walls, or pass through them with the risk of being killed. Which style you choose is dependent upon your playing style. Having no Explorer's Hat is a bet, since you don't know if the cave is already blocked or not.

Once you are by the amethyst deposits, it's a good idea to block the entrance with walls and doors so that the dragons won't get in. If you are looking to stay there for a long period of time, a furnace can also be handy. Note that mining with an Explorer's Hat disables its effect for several seconds.

4. Challenger

Whether you are doing the "Collect 1 Dragon Heart" quest, it is cool to be able to resurrect. Why not kill a dragon?

Blocking

Before killing any dragons, you need to attack it from a safe distance where it won't be able to damage you back. If there is a dragon already blocked inside walls, or stuck between diamond ores, just skip this step!

Others may not be so fortunate. Be patient! First, quickly find a dragon to kill, and build a fire and a workbench and place it quickly. Then, build 4~6 wooden walls and surround the dragon. Make sure to not block the passage through the cave. Try to place several walls far apart, then fill in the gaps. If it gets away, don't be frustrated! Keep trying and you will succeed. (Unless you run out of wood)

Torturing

After blocking, it's easy. Just keep attacking the trapped dragon until it dies. It's easy with a spear, but can be a bit difficult with a sword. Keep your eye on your health meter at all times since the game can bug and the dragon may be able to attack you. Also keep your eye on the wall's health, and be able to replace it or repair it with a wrench if necessary.

Congratulations! You have reached the end of the mission!

What's Next?

Thank you for reading! I hope that this guide has helped you gain some perspective about things that go on in the winter. Don't be disappointed if you die! Practice makes perfect. The good news is, surviving in the winter is considerably the hardest part of the game!
