Overview[]

A biome is a particular section of the world with a specific climate, home to particular mobs and containing particular resources. There are currently five biomes in starve.io: the forest, the winter, the ocean, the lava biome and the desert. The forest biome was the inaugural biome, the place where you spawn at the beginning of the game. Afterwards, the winter was added in the "WINTER IS FINALLY HERE" update, located next to the forest. The next biome, known as the ocean, is a large body of water, which contains small islands, the only places where treasure chests can be found. The ocean biome is located all around the islands, and was added in the "VAMOS A LA PLAYA" update. The lava biome is located in the top right of the map, covering about 1/5 of it,and was added in the "It smells like burning!" update. The new desert biome was added in the "Desert" update.

Players start out in the forest biome, and generally move to biomes that are more dangerous but contain better loot (such as the winter, ocean, lava and desert biomes) as they progress. Mobs spawning and cold/heat are based on the biome they are in.

Overview

The Forest is the original biome that encompassed all of the map when the game came out. Currently, it covers about 1/5 of the map and takes up half of the bottom section, accompanied by the ocean. The forest is the basis for survival, as it has a much warmer climate than other biomes, as well as less powerful mobs. All players spawn in the forest, and work their way towards the winter and/or the ocean.

Advantages

The forest is advantageous for players because of its warmer climate. It also provides players with basic resources and food required for survival. The forest is the only biome that allows players to plant: berries, wheat, pumpkins, carrots, tomatoes, garlics, watermelons, thorn bushes & aloe vera without first placing down a plant plot and/or bridge (excluding islands in the ocean). Players are also able to move faster in the forest than in the winter and ocean. Ground / soil can be exclusively gathered in the forest, using a shovel.

Disadvantages

The forest can be disadvantageous for players mainly due to the number of players there. There is competition for resources and points. For example, players may take berries or gather resources right when you were going to, leaving nothing for you. Also, aggressive players (known as "Savages") would attack, chase, and possibly kill you so that they can have resources all to themselves, or simply because they want your points so they can get in the leaderboard or want to get items from your box after you die. If you want to avoid that, try going on servers with fewer people. Be careful though, you may lag a lot and still be chased. Also, the forest does not give the higher tier resources of diamonds, amethysts, dragon hearts, and winter fur, etc. Not to mention it is fairly hard to get water without going to Lakes, which are usually camped by other players.

Overview

The Winter is a biome that was added in the "Winter Is Finally Here" update. It is above the Forest and covers approximately 1/5 of the map. The winter has 2 tree borders, one on the west and one on the east facing the ocean, with a small hole at the top of the east one for easier access to the Lava Biome. The winter is the coldest biome in starve.io, and as such, it is almost impossible to stay alive without using any warming items such as Chapkas or Fires. The winter is the higher stage for advanced players to obtain high tier resources, such as Diamond, Amethyst, Dragon Heart and Mammoth Fur.

Advantages

  • There are fewer players and bases in the winter than the forest, meaning players can focus more on survival than clashing with savages and noobs.
  • You can get resources more easily there due to how large the biome is, and because of the lack of players.
  • The winter contains more powerful resources that are easily accessed from a winter base. You will also be able to obtain resources where you cannot find anywhere else, such as winter fur, mammoth fur, and dragon hearts, which are vital for high-tier chapkas and dragon swords/spears/bows.
  • Anywhere in the winter, even in the cave, digging with a shovel will give you ice cubes, which you can craft with a bottle and a heat source into water bottles. This means that you can quench your thirst anywhere in the winter.

Disadvantages

  • The winter is extremely cold. Therefore, it is recommended to use a chapka, and to have plenty of fires in your inventory to place down in emergencies.
  • There are no naturally spawning plant seeds, so a player would have to bring them over from the Forest, along with dirt for a plant plot in order to be able to plant anything.
  • Winter mobs are harder than those in the forest, and can be challenging to kill without the right technique and equipment. Because of this, food can be a greater problem. Also, dragons can make cave bases hard to create and maintain without an Explorer's Hat.
  • The player movement speed is reduced by 20% here due to the snow. This increases the overall difficulty of every aspect of gameplay in the winter.
  • The only sources of water in the winter are the hole in the wall near the cave that opens up to the ocean and the ice cubes that you can harvest from the ground using a shovel. This can make the process of getting water slower and harder.
  • Blizzard is a condition that occasionally occurs in the winter. During blizzards, players not standing under a roof or in the cave receive damage every tick. Amount of damage varies based on what level of cold protection the player is wearing.

The Cave

The cave is located in the top left edge of the biome. The cave is guarded by over 5 dragons. Amethyst and Dragon Heart resources can be obtained in the cave, as long as the player avoids being killed by the dragons in the cave. Most players block off the dragons by using walls for safe passage into the cave, and if they intend to kill the dragons, they usually trap a dragon and hit it through the walls by using a spear. However, if using this method, players should use high-tier walls and/or a wrench, as dragons will destroy structures. When players don't intend to use walls, they use an explorer's hat to get to the amethyst. Note that the mob-calming effect of the explorer's hat is disabled for a few seconds every time a player left-clicks.

Tips

Even with a coat, the heat loss is about as much as wearing nothing during the night in the forest. Also, the polar bear and the arctic fox have a lot of HP and are very dangerous, as the biome is in general. Make lots of campfires, full gold tools, and try not to die!

In the winter there are supplies of every deposit that currently exists, except for Reidite. It should be noted that most trees inside of the Winter Biome will only give about 25-40 wood each, so it is a good idea to get as much wood as you can beforehand to make fires instead of relying on trees inside of the winter.

If there is no inventory space prior to entering the winter to hold extra gold for making diamond tools, there are large amounts available inside of the center of the biome to mine.

The only way to obtain food inside of the winter is by killing arctic foxes and polar bears for meat, but this is not recommended for inexperienced players who don't know how to kill them. A good idea to make sure that you have enough food for an expedition is to set up a farm in the forest for berries, and obtain at least 200-300 of them.

Since there are no lakes in the winter, it is advised to bring water bottles and shovels to mine ice cubes and convert it to water.

Also, bring lots of campfires and roofs to battle the cold.

Trivia

  • The name tag turns dark blue when a player goes into the winter.

Overview

The ocean is a biome added in the Vamos a la Playa updates. The ocean occupies around 2/5 of the map. In the ocean, the thirst bar will fill, but the cold bar will decrease faster, and you also lose oxygen. The same effects also occur to the player in the lake and river.

The ocean contains sandy islands, where treasure chests can spawn, and are home to piranhas and the kraken.

The border between the biomes and the ocean is the beach, the crabs' home and where sand can be gathered infinitely, using any type of shovel.

Tips

It's recommended that you bring bridges with you when going in the ocean, because otherwise, you can easily drown, freeze to death or be killed by mobs, which are faster than you in water. Also, most players use the islands to travel across the ocean (unless if they have access to bridges). It is certainly possible to travel in the ocean without advanced equipment, but obtaining some sort of diving gear will help you travel faster in the water, and reduce oxygen loss.

Plus it is also possible to get stone/gold/diamond/amethyst from digging sand in the beach., the chance to dig minerals can increase if you use the higher tier of shovel or wearing a Crown of Luck.

Trivia

  • The islands are considered forest, not ocean. As such, you can place an emerald machine on an island. Also, islands count towards the "Explore each biome for at least 1 day" quest.

Overview

The Lava Biome is the biome introduced in the "It Smells Like Burning!" update. The Lava Biome is located at the top right, covering approximately 1/5 of the map. It is home to the Lava Monsters, Lava Dragons, and the Baby Lava Dragons. This biome also contains the second rarest but the most powerful mineable resource currently in the game, reidite.

In the Lava Biome you will heat up significantly, putting you in danger of overheating. There are lava pools and lava rivers which heat up and deal copious amounts of damage to players inside them. Standing on bridges will prevent this effect. Note that if your heat bar is filled up all the way, you will begin to lose health. Heat protections can reduce this effect. To keep your heat bar low, you need to eat ice cubes, obtained from the Winter biome with a shovel, which lower your temperature and bring your heat bar down.

Tips

  • To save ice cubes, only eat them when your heat bar is fully filled up. However, if you need to regenerate, eat enough ice cubes to keep your heat bar beneath 65%. You can only regenerate if none of your status bars are flashing.
  • Try to bring 300-500 ice cubes from the winter; not only do they cool you down, but you need them to make water bottles if you're staying a while.
  • Don't forget to unequip your chapka, as it will heat you up even more.
  • If you want to traverse the lava pools without taking damage, use bridges.
  • If aggressive players attack you in the Winter, try going around resource deposits and blocking them with walls, while gathering ice. Then, go to the Lava Biome and eat as little ice as possible. Be careful, as they may have a better means of transportation across the Ocean.
  • Lava Monsters are about the same speed as you when you're not holding weapons. When you equip a weapon, they are faster than you, so be careful when attacking them.
  • It is much easier to get amethyst in the Lava Biome than in the Winter, since you don't have to evade (or fight) as many dragons to get it.
  • If you have a heat protection, wear it. It will slow down or prevent your heat gain.
  • If you want reidite, you will have to go to the reidite "cave" in the corner of the map. This cave is slightly smaller than the cave in the Winter. You should place reidite doors to protect yourself, as Lava Monsters and Lava Dragons can't break reidite structures. Remember to leave the doors open when you leave: everyone hates cave-blockers.
  • If you kill a Lava Dragon within 10 days of spawning you will get the Lava Orb, which, in conjunction with the Blue Orb, can be used to make the Lava Sword/Spear, which are the most powerful weapons in the game (apart from the Bows). See this page for tips.

Trivia

  • In the Lava Biome, if you wear any cold protection, you will gain heat faster at night than day.
  • The Diving Mask and Suit influence the heat, so it is generally not recommended to wear them in the lava biome.

Overview

The desert is a biome added in the "Desert" update. The Desert is currently in the southeast corner of the map, covering roughly 1/5 of the map. The desert temperature is a big threat to the player. During the day, it is hot in the desert, though not as hot as the Lava Biome. During the night, it is about as cold as the Forest at night. The cold at nighttime can be reduced with any coat, but a turban is especially effective. Turbans are the only way to reduce the heat in the daytime, as Heat Protections do not work. Also, there is the threat of sandstorms, like blizzards in the winter, but more powerful. The sandstorm will do damage to players rapidly and can easily kill them. The only way to protect yourself from it is by wearing a Turban, or by hiding under a roof.

The desert contains two dangerous enemies, the vulture and sandworm. The vulture is essentially an aggressive hawk with more health, flying through the air and attacking players who are not covered by roofs. The sandworm is a powerful mob that chases the player underneath the sand and only can be hit when above the ground. The sandworm can also damage structures, although it is weaker than the Dragon.

Strategy

  • Since the desert is hot in the day and cold in the night, make sure you have some sort of fire source and ice. Also, a sandstorm may happen at any given time, so make sure you have some roofs, or a turban/cap. You can ignore these if you have a Ninja Outfit or Pilot Hat, as your tempurature stays level, and you are almost immune to sandstorms.
  • If you make a base in the desert, make sure it has roofs and bridges, to protect yourself from vultures, sandworms, and sandstorms.

Overview

Islands are small pieces of land that exist in the Ocean biome. There are 6 islands in total. Islands are the only places where treasure chests can be found. Islands were added in the Treasure Hunt update, on the 8th of July.

Islands are made out of the sand, and usually offer palm trees and stone deposits, along with a chance for a treasure chest. In addition, a few of 6 islands have a berry bush. The most right-corner one is the biggest among all 6 islands and contains an extra lava pool. Islands can have several treasure chests, which respawn after a certain amount of time. A treasure chest contains only one item, but this can be anything in the game, except quest-items. Rather than functioning as an actual chest, treasure chests act like stationary mobs. A key is not required. Players can simply hit it with a weapon, repeatedly, until it is destroyed, to get the item inside. When a treasure chest is destroyed, another treasure chest is spawned on another, randomly chosen island after a short delay.
